An essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the small, peppery fruits of the Litsea cubeba tree — an evergreen relative of the laurel, native to southern China, Vietnam, Taiwan and Indonesia. Also known as May Chang or "tropical verbena," it is one of the most radiant and uplifting fragrances in the natural palette.

It is intensely citrusy, fresh and sparkling — reminiscent of a blend of lemon, lemongrass and verbena, with a light spicy accent and a subtly green, floral depth. Its high citral content (up to 70–85%) gives it a crystal-clear, brightly luminous quality. Compared to lemon oil, it is more long-lasting, juicier and less sharp — with a warm, slightly exotic character.
