A 100% natural composition created by Payan Bertrand as an alternative to the classic guaiacwood essential oil (Bulnesia sarmientoi) — a raw material that is becoming increasingly difficult to source due to CITES restrictions, growing pressure for sustainable forestry in South America, and rising prices. The Substitute is built from physically isolated fractions and natural materials from other woody sources, blended to capture the spirit of the original — entirely without synthetics, in keeping with Payan Bertrand's premium natural ingredients philosophy.

Important note: this is not a true "one-for-one" replacement for natural guaiacwood oil. Compared to the original, the Payan Bertrand version is noticeably smokier — with a stronger, sharper opening of burnt wood and dry bonfire facets, whereas the classic Bulnesia sarmientoi oil is softer, sweeter in a balsamic-rose direction, and creamier overall. That said, it is an interesting material in its own right — with a distinctive, well-defined character and a legitimate place in a perfumer's palette. It is best approached as a standalone ingredient rather than purely as a surrogate.
