Geosmin is a molecule with a photorealistic scent of fresh, damp soil. It is produced by cyanobacteria and actinobacteria and released upon the death of bacteria. The human nose is incredibly sensitive to it. We can detect 0.006 micrograms per liter of water. This means that we would sense one drop poured into an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

In addition to its obvious use in woody and patchouli accords, Geosmin can be used in practically any type of composition, adding depth and naturalness to it.
