The molecule with CAS number 6790-58-5 is one of the most important substances in the palette of a contemporary perfumer.

Every reputable raw material manufacturing company has its own variant. Firmenich has Ambrox, Symrise has Ambrioxide, Givaudan has Ambrifix, and KAO has Ambroxan. It is this last name that has entered common usage and is even used by people who are not perfumers.

Theoretically, all the above substances are the same molecule, yet each differs slightly, which means that most perfumers usually have their favorite 'ambroxan' ;)
