Odor description: ambery, woody, marine, clean, warm, animalic nuances

A classic ambery molecule from the Firmenich portfolio — chemically dodecahydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl-naphtho[2,1-b]furan, obtained through green synthesis from sclareol (an isolate of clary sage oil). A historic material: Firmenich patented the ambrox synthesis in 1950, and Ambrox DL is the foundational, "classic" version of this family.

Where does "DL" in the name come from? It stands for dextro (D) + laevo (L) — Ambrox DL is a racemic mixture of enantiomers (containing at least 50% racemate). This is the main difference from the newer versions of this family — Ambroxan (KAO), Ambrofix (Givaudan), Ambrox Super (Firmenich), Cetalox Laevo — which are enantiopure L-ambrox (the laevo isomer alone). Technically, Ambrox DL is a blend of approximately 30% proprietary Cachalox and around 70% Cetalox (9-epi-Ambrox).

Compared to classic Ambroxan or Cetalox, Ambrox DL features a stronger woody accent along with an additional, slightly sharp note. It can also be perceived as slightly darker and denser.
