Hedione – the molecule that revolutionised the perfume industry.

If you were to draw up a list of the molecules that revolutionised the world of perfumery, Hedione would without doubt be near the very top. It is a material of remarkably subtle character, in which a trained nose will find notes of jasmine, citrus and fresh flowers. It brings a cool, fresh, luminous aura, giving a fragrance lightness and space. It has been described as a beam of light passing through crystal-clear water – transparent, harmonious and almost ethereal.

Hedione is today one of the most widely used materials in modern perfumery, in commercial and niche fragrances alike. It is precisely this combination of subtlety and versatility that has kept it, for decades, among the most valuable materials on a perfumer's palette. So what exactly is this molecule, where did it come from, and why did it play such an important part in the development of contemporary perfumery?

What is Hedione?

Hedione – or, to give it its proper name, methyl dihydrojasmonate – is a synthetic aroma molecule developed in the 1960s. It was created as an attempt to reproduce in the laboratory the fresh, luminous facets of jasmine that were difficult to obtain from natural raw materials. Jasmine absolute is a lush, sticky, rich scent that easily overwhelms a composition. Its character is heady and dense because of the indole it contains, which makes jasmine smell deep, heavy and slightly animalic.

Hedione was the answer to the need to separate the lightness in that scent from the density. In the 1960s, researchers put jasmine sambac absolute under the microscope, wanting to isolate a single fleeting aroma from it – the impression of cool, floral freshness. It turned out that one particular ester was responsible: methyl jasmonate, which accounts for barely one per cent of the natural flower extract. Creating a stable synthetic copy of it in the laboratory produced a tool of almost engineering precision.

From a chemical and a practical point of view, Hedione rarely behaves in a formula like a traditional ingredient; far more often it acts as a signal booster. It is a colourless liquid that works like good lighting on a film set, or a pinch of salt in a dessert – it lifts everything around it and draws the best out of the surrounding notes. The molecule interacts with the whole composition, increasing its carry and dispersing it through the air. Instead of adding weight to a formula, it functions as a synthetic trampoline. It breaks up the density of a perfume, adds air, and makes even the heaviest accords lift away from the skin.

What does Hedione smell like?

Hedione is less a smell than an atmosphere it creates. On its own it barely registers – a delicate, fresh, luminous aroma working in the background. In its character you can find associations with jasmine, green stems and fresh petals, enriched with an accent reminiscent of lemon peel, tart lime or grapefruit. It is superb at underlining floral, citrus and fresh fragrances.

Some perfumers compare the subtle aroma of Hedione to walking into a room where a jasmine plant is growing in a pot. There is a floral scent in the air, something fresh and green, but it is in no way overwhelming; the greenness stays a comfortable background note.

Smelled on its own, Hedione may make no impression at all. And yet that elusiveness is precisely its strength. Once it is in a composition, it begins to reveal its character gradually – a kind of sunrise that does not dazzle, but slowly fills the space with light. It opens with a soft, transparent, cool-green quality and moves into a delicate jasmine character – never assertive, but watery, luminous and diffuse.

Hedione is the feeling that the air around the skin has become lighter, cleaner and more spacious; it lets fresh air into a composition.

How the molecule was discovered

The story of Hedione begins with research into jasmine itself – more precisely, into the large-flowered variety (Jasminum grandiflorum).

In 1957 the chemist Édouard Demole, working for Firmenich, isolated methyl jasmonate from jasmine absolute, the molecule largely responsible for its characteristic olfactory signature. As a natural material, jasmine was very expensive, yet widely used in the perfumery of the day. Extracting methyl jasmonate directly from jasmine absolute was, however, uneconomical, since the molecule made up only 1% of its composition.

Demole noticed, though, that a small modification of the structure could yield a material that was cheaper and more useful for perfumery. He carried out a catalytic hydrogenation of the double bond present in methyl jasmonate, and in doing so created its more stable analogue: methyl dihydrojasmonate. In chemical terms it was a seemingly insignificant change – the addition of two hydrogen atoms and the removal of a reactive carbon–carbon double bond – but it was exactly this operation that set off a revolution in the history of the fragrance industry, giving Hedione its characteristic transparent aura. Firmenich patented the discovery in 1960, and the full scientific paper on the molecule appeared in 1962.

The commercial breakthrough came in 1966, when the outstanding nose Edmond Roudnitska used Hedione in Eau Sauvage, created for the house of Dior. The composition contained around 3% of the new molecule – a dose considered very high and very bold at the time. The result? A fresh citrus-floral, volatile scent with extraordinary projection. The product was an immediate success, Hedione took a permanent place in the perfumer's arsenal, and the Eau Sauvage line still holds its own on the market today.

By the 1960s Hedione was already selling in tens of kilograms; by the 1970s, in tonnes. In time the material found its way into thousands of formulas, in widely varying doses, and to this day it is regarded as a backbone of modern fragrance chemistry.

How do perfumers use Hedione?

Hedione is a perfumery material that works as a note, a modifier and an amplifier all at once – depending on how much of it there is in the composition.

The standard concentration in a formula runs from 2 to 15%, although there is nothing to stop you using it at 35% or more. That is a range unheard of for most aromatic materials, which become dominant, even unpleasant, at too high a dose. When working with Hedione the notion of ‘too much’ barely exists, which is why beginner perfumers reach for it so readily. It is relatively easy to work with and there is little risk of getting it wrong. At low concentrations – of the order of 1–3% – it works almost invisibly, gently lifting the composition and softening the transitions between notes. At higher levels, 10–20%, it starts to build a distinct floral-jasmine character, light, with a tart citrus freshness. When it makes up a large share of the whole formula, it improves projection, strengthens realism and binds everything into one.

Perfumers use Hedione in three roles, rarely separable. The first is the classic reconstruction of jasmine: Hedione is used in building jasmine and floral accords because it adds volume and gives a perfume longevity. It slims down the naturally dense absolute, drawing out its fresh, floral radiance without the animalic note.

The second role is the amplification of citrus notes. Hedione enters into a particular synergy with bergamot and lemon – it extends their presence over time and gives them a depth they cannot sustain on their own. The third, perhaps the most interesting and the most important, is the building of space. Hedione functions as a diffusion booster and a lifting agent: it makes the surrounding materials project further and land more softly. In practice this means that, added to a heavy oriental accord, it does not change its character but unpins it from the skin.

Combined with bergamot oil, beta-ionone and damascenone, it makes it possible to reconstruct a tea note – a fine example of just how multifunctional this molecule is. It appears in white florals, in aquatics (marine, sea-breeze and rain compositions), in fougères (cool herbal freshness over a woody base), in niche compositions and in mass-market bestsellers. Longevity on a blotter, for the neat material, is over 70 hours.

Hedione vs Hedione HC

In 1990 a sister version appeared: Hedione HC (High Cis). It is an advanced evolution of the classic Hedione molecule which, despite its similarity to the standard version, has a completely different tone.

Both standard Hedione and its HC version are methyl dihydrojasmonate – the same molecule, but with a different isomeric composition. The Hedione molecule has two stereogenic centres, which means it can exist in four spatial variants, or stereoisomers. In perfumery practice, two of them matter: the trans isomer and the cis isomer. Standard Hedione is a mixture of both forms in a ratio of roughly 9:1 – nine parts trans to one part cis. Yet it is the cis isomer that accounts for most of the olfactory effect. Its detection threshold is around twenty times lower than that of the trans isomer, which means the nose registers it at a many times lower concentration. The trans isomer is, to put it simply, ballast: present in the formula in the overwhelming proportion, but olfactorily inert.

Using special distillation and catalytic synthesis techniques, Firmenich managed to isolate the cis isomer and control its concentration. The HC version contains over 75% cis isomer, which makes it stronger, more concentrated and more clearly floral. The scent changes qualitatively: standard Hedione is broad, diffusive and transparent – it works like a fine mist spreading through a space. Hedione HC, by contrast, is richer, creamier, with a more pronounced magnolia and jasmine character. Some perfumers describe the HC version as rich, creamy and magnolia-like, while ordinary Hedione has the reputation of being lighter, dewier and more transparent.

Choosing between them is a question of the role the molecule is to play in the composition. Standard Hedione works wherever a general radiance and lightness are needed – in citrus fougères, in tea-green accords and in chypre accords (fresh citrus, a floral heart, an earthy-woody base).

Hedione HC is the one to reach for when a distinct floral heart matters – in white-floral reconstructions, in jasmine soliflores (a composition built on the scent of a single flower, in this case jasmine) and in compositions where brightness and juiciness are meant to be heard, not merely sensed in the background.

Hedione in commercial perfumery

The way the industry began to use Hedione can be seen in three commercial fragrances. Each of them marks a different stage – from cautious experiment, through growing confidence, to a complete break with convention.

Dior Eau Sauvage (1966) – concentration approx. 2.5%

Eau Sauvage was the first perfume to use Hedione, and at a concentration of just 2.5%. For a revolution, a modest dose. Hedione was an expensive material at the time, though, and its use was limited to fine fragrance – luxury, high-quality perfumery – and in small amounts. Building the composition around a citrus base of bergamot and lemon, Edmond Roudnitska used Hedione as a diffusive agent: a material that gave the whole a clarity and a radiance unattainable with naturals. The effect was so novel, so unlike anything before it, that the industry needed time to understand what had happened. Eau Sauvage proved that even in a minimal amount, Hedione can take a composition to a new level.

Diorella (1972) – concentration approx. 10%

Six years after Eau Sauvage, Roudnitska returned to the same house and the same molecule, this time with a far bolder hand.

In Diorella, Hedione (10%), combined with Helional (5%), patchouli (around 6%) and eugenol, plays the key role. That is four times the concentration used in Eau Sauvage, and you can hear it in the character of the perfume – Diorella is more floral, juicier and more daring. Some describe its effect as the scent of a woman walking by the sea on a sunny day, with a light wind lifting the aroma of flowers and citrus around her.

The perfume showed that Hedione was not a one-off trick but a tool that can be dosed and shaped, played with and experimented on. Roudnitska treated the molecule like a lens – the more of it, the sharper the floral image and the more space between the notes.

Comme des Garçons Odeur 53 (1998) – concentration approx. 65%

Odeur 53 is the revolutionary point in the use of Hedione in composition. The fragrance contains 63–65% methyl dihydrojasmonate, which makes the molecule the majority of the formula. Martine Pallix and Anne-Sophie Chapuis built their project around the idea of an ‘anti-perfume’: Odeur 53 contains no floral or plant essences; most of its materials are faithful recreations of inorganic smells – volcanic rock, freshly cut grass, sand, metal. Hedione plays a remarkably interesting part in this formula: a material associated with jasmine and floralcy, used in extreme excess, begins to create an abstract, synthetic aura of cleanliness and space. Hedione no longer smells like Hedione; it is the scent of the air it is able to build around itself. Odeur 53 is proof that the molecule had matured into an autonomous material, capable of defining an entirely new aesthetic category in perfumery.

Both Hedione and Hedione HC play an enormous role in perfumery. Although they are used for different purposes, they never let you forget that they are sister materials. They build an aura around themselves, a freshness and a lightness that has grown to iconic status. The effect of Hedione cannot be mistaken for anything else, and a trained nose will pick the molecule out even at a minimal concentration. Today both versions are cheap and readily available, which keeps feeding their growing popularity.

In truth they have never fallen from their pedestal – for years they have held their reputation as some of the most cult molecules ever created, and their presence in a fragrance lifts it to a new, ethereal level.
